After a wave of non-compliance issues at cutting plants and cold storage facilities across the UK the Food Standards Agency announced a nationwide review of the guidelines and how they are being implemented, and why standards are not being met at certain points of the process.
All types of cutting plant will be included in the review, which is set to start in the summer. Key points of the investigation will look at the support which plants have in understanding an implementing safety checks, why incidents happen and how they are dealt with, and what the responsibility of all players in the industry in in relation to food safety and compliance.
The review comes at an opportune time, as with Brexit on the horizon it is important that we have a clear idea of the standards expected in the UK processing plants, and in slaughterhouses, where CCTV is now mandatory. There may well be more questions to come, but the review will give the industry the integrity it needs going into the future.
